FEBRUARY//MARCH 2011 - CONTINUUM
CULTURE LOVES. TO INFINITY AND BEYOND.
We can be disposable creatures, mindlessly abandoning and replacing – a phone with outdated features, fashion that now brings an involuntary cringe, a buzzword no longer tossed around by the A-listers. Out with the old, in with the new-for-now.
And then there are those few sacred things we find sentiment in, like a keepsake we defensively harbour and proudly display quite simply because it reminds us of its time and inspires us with its form and wisdom. Would we have kept it, referred to it, protected it if it didn’t?
We plunder the past and create in the now, believing it too will become a source of insight and reflection to inspire a new ‘something’ eventually. It’s the song that never ends. After all, it’s not the changing of the guard that keeps the wheels of evolution in motion – it’s simply the light shining on the new as the old skulks off to the shadows. Yet our keepsakes – precious cargo that signposts our life – will always be on display.
culture loves the mesh. We’re excited by the continuum – the new blood surging through our industry making their own mark, while the masters coax and coach and bestow upon us their abundant experience. This overlapping of generations and genius, and the endless possibilities for electric creation… may it never end.
Current Issue // Features // On the Set. Killing it in Front of the Camera. By Rhianne Muir // Most of us don't think twice as we plonk ourselves in the chair for a hair appointment, as it's easy to forget that a haircut is a privilege, not a right. The truth is, a trip to the salon is a luxury experience that not everybody is privy to, including the socially disadvantaged. Craig Smith of Brisbane's Fruition salons thinks that everyone should be able to feel as good about themselves as we do after a top notch salon service, so for the final stage of his collaboration with young people's charity Youth Insearch, seven bright young things were given the full salon experience before taking part in a photo shoot, generously sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. Forget feeling good, these youngsters were left feeling on top of the world.
Current Issue // Features // Fever Las Vegas by Hayley Miller // If there were ever an occasion where that little proverb 'work hard, play hard' was practiced with gusto, my bet would be on the recent extravaganza that was Redken Symposium 2011. Las Vegas, baby! That shiny, happy playground where everything twinkles and you feel like your luck is on the brink of turning or so they say. For this little Vegas apprentice, it wasn't so much about luck as it was about stamina - a smoking hot hairdressing arena coupled with all the temptations (and by all, I don?t mean all) of this mesmerising city had me mixing Red Bull-Berocca cocktails before my feet even hit the desert. My quest to capture Symposium and conquer Sin City in three days was underway?
Current Issue // Features // Proud To Be a Hairdresser // Jules Tognini // A brilliant beacon on Australia's hairdressing horizon, Jules Tognini has well and truly earned his place at the forefront of the Gen-Y hairdressing frontier. A proud Matrix ambassador and educator, Jules has racked up more than his far share of attention, accolades and awards, the pinnacle of which was being named The Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo 2010 Apprentice of the Year. We're pretty certain that the best is yet to come, but in the meantime we?ll settle with taking a look at what makes the talented Mr. Tognini tick?

Current Issue // Feature // Working Lunch with Alan White // With more than three decades of hairdressing history, session supremo Alan White has an amazingly impressive resume that reads like a Who?s Who of the fashion, beauty and music worlds. He hung out with cult 80s pop icons Boy George, Depeche Mode and Spandau Ballet in their early careers; gave songstress Kim Wilde her signature ?do for the release of her hit single ?Kids in America? and travelled the world with supermodel Claudia Schiffer as her preferred stylist. From London to Paris and New York, Alan?s done it all. These days he prefers to keep his fingers on the pulse from his home outside Canberra with his Australian family, drawing on his colourful past to give up-and-coming stylists an education they?ll never forget. Current Issue // Feature // Vulture Preppy 101. Vulture Goes Back to School. // Yes dear reader, 'tis something quite stirring about the concept of returning to academia. Dashing down hallowed hallways in Grecian-columned grand palaces of erudition and higher learning with earnest intent. And to consider such endeavour at the dawning of one?s (ahem) middle years draws forth untold smug pre-eminence, when one considers one?s maturity and life experience. How could any of those spotty teenagers hold a candle to a man of wealth and taste? (Well perhaps not so much wealth).
Current Issue // Hairdressing Royalty with Akin Konizi // When Akin Konizi took out the 2008 British Hairdresser of the Year award, the hair world stood up and took notice. Regaining that title in 2009, Akin cemented the fact that he was indeed a force to be reckoned with. But whilst these profile accolades catapulted the passionate stylist into the limelight, it was definitely not a case of overnight success. In fact, Konizi has spent more than two decades steadily climbing the ladder to the top and now boasts 20 HOB salons throughout the UK, a number that’s strategically planned to double over the next five years. Indeed, Akin Konizi might just well be the most driven quiet achiever in the hair scene today. By Jenny Burns
