MY STYLE
Classic Ocean's 11 style mixed with a dash of Byron Bay surf grunge
When it comes to star quality, Daniel MacPherson is the bomb. Blessed with classic style, rugged good looks, talent to boot and a charismatic charm that makes women go weak at the knees and men want to be his buddy, this twenty-something actor and triathlete is our homegrown version of Mr McDreamy. Daniel began his acting career as Joe Samuels in the TV series neighbours and became an instant hit, winning a Logie for ‘Most Popular New Male Talent' in 1999. He moved to London in 2001 to work on his theatre craft, where he played to packed houses in the West End tour performing both Jesus and Judas (on alternate nights) in the hit musical Godspell. The accolades from critics and media attention read - ‘a revelation'; ‘charismatic'; and ‘a real find' - and led to his regular television role on The Bill playing PC Cameron Tait, where he was viewed by more than 10 million Brits twice weekly. Back on the homefront, Daniel has worn various acting and presenting hats, from hosting Network Ten's hugely successful The X Factor, presenting a National Geographic Presents special for Foxtel and starring in the hit mini-series Tripping Over in 2006. In March 2007, Daniel was cast as Simon Joyner in the drama series City Homicide, for the Seven Network. culture caught up with Daniel between shooting for the series in Melbourne to talk fashion, style and his new role as ambassador for the new L'Oréal Professionnel HOMME men's haircare range.
How would you describe your style?
Pretty relaxed and cruisey - a part of my childhood growing up at the beach and the lifestyle I lead. Kind of Hugo Boss meets Quicksilver somewhere near Byron Bay...
What type of clothes do you like to wear?
I am a sucker for fitted jackets and every man needs at least one tailored or bespoke suit. I like fitted tees and distressed jeans and have enough old school Vans to sink a battleship.
What labels would be found in your wardrobe?
Hugo Boss, Hugo Orange, G Star, Oniksuka Tiger, Oakley and lots of vintage tees.
Define a fashion tragedy?
When the clothes wear you.
How about a hair tragedy?
When someone else's styling of your hair doesn't fit with your personal style and attitude. Take an idea, but then put your own personal touch on it.
Who looks after your hair? What's your hair regime?
My hair has a horrible life! Constant styling for work and then the sun, sweat and chlorine for play. I look after it! I have to. Recently I have been using L'Oréal Professionnel HOMME Vitality and Densite Shampoo. These products alone have made a huge difference to the health and look of my hair.
Who do you think has great style?
Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Steve McQueen.
What are your three favourite possessions and why?
My Gibson Songwriter acoustic guitar, because music is the purest from of emotional expression. It's a necessity.
A Bvlgari ring given to me on my 21st birthday from my mother - for the love it signifies and the ending of the childhood it represents.
And my running shoes... they are the source of some of the most wonderful moments of my life. They make me feel free and alive. They stink a little though!
What do you think is your best feature?
I think my generosity.
Tell us about a typical day in your life?
There is no such thing! My life is a dynamic balance, in which there is no set routine or anything typical. It's either up at 5.30am to be on set until 6.00pm, or up at 5.30am to be on my bike by 6.00am. If I work, then it's a full day of filming somewhere in Melbourne, and hopefully home for an evening run in the dark, before dinner and learning my lines on the couch. If it is a day off, it's a morning session, followed by coffee and papers (long macchiato please) followed by emails, maybe another session at lunchtime, clean the house, go to the post office, have a siesta, a 5.00pm training session - usually swimming - dinner and line learning on the couch...
What sort of music are you listening to at the moment?
Kings of Leon, Jason Mraz, The Editors and somehow U2's Achtung Baby has made it into my car stereo! Still a classic album.
What are your three tips for feeling great?
Surround yourself with great positive people; never forget to make time for yourself; and get in the ocean!
